Is Colin Powell Really a Republican?

Today the talking heads on MSNBC were speculating on the Coming of the Republican Savior and mentioned the names of Condi Rice and Colin Powell. I don't have a sentence to waste on Condi, but the mention of Colin Powell brought back a suspicion I have long held: Colin Powell is a fake Republican.

My evidence: He is obviously a man of deep convictions and of accomplished intellect. He seems compassionate and deeply caring about the soldiers he sent into harm's way. His preference for the State department portfolio over the Defense Department role in the Bush administration betrayed his belief in negotiation over belligerence. Name another Republican with those qualities.

Powell may once have had aspirations to be President, but is probably too disgusted with the past seven years and the make-believe world of right wing Repugnia to contemplate doing anything Repugnican.

  • Condi is likely to be our VP nominee. Colin will not.

In fact, in a longshot, brokered convention environment, Condi could emerge as a compromise candidate.

Powell made enemies in DC by leaking all over the place. His aide, Richard Armitage, could have ended the Plame scandal early on by admitting that it was he who spoke to Novak. He didn't, probably because Powell wanted to cause problems for Dick Cheney, who was causing problems for him.

Condi doesn't leak against her own WH. The rest of the Party knows this.

  • Neither Powell's convictions NOR intellect would allow him to be VP to any of the front-running nimrods for the Republican ticket. I agree that Condi could wind up as their VP nominee as she has none of Powell's troublesome hang-ups.
